What is a Domain Name?
Every website can be found by a numeric address known as the Internet
Protocol address or IP address. The IP address for this website is
64.186.76.163 which can be hard to remember. The domain name is
24-7webs.com which is much easier to remember. This domain name needs to
be registered with an organization called a registrar which is then
capable of informing all of the internet routers how to find
24-7webs.com. They know that the website exists on a server accessed
through nameservers ns1.24-7dns.com and ns2.24-7dns.com. The server then
knows how to route incoming requests to the IP address and you get our
content sent to your browser.
What is a Domain Name Extension?
The extension for 24-7webs.com is the .com part. Originally when the
internet was set-up, there were three extensions, .com, .net, and .org.
".com" was meant to be used for commercial (business)
websites, ".net" for internet service providers, and
".org" for non-profit groups and organizations that were
neither a business nor a service provider. However, now that convention
has gone by the way side and you can find a variety of all types of
sites using the extensions interchangeably.
There are also extensions that are country specific. You need to be
living in or doing business in that country in order to get those
extensions. For instance in the USA you can get ".us" and in
Canada you can get ".ca". In Great Britain they use ".uk".
Recently there were more extensions introduced. ".name" for
personal name websites, ".info", ".ws" and so on.
The one most widely know is .com. If you can, get the name you want
with a .com extension.
Where do you Buy Domain Names?
You can find any number of registrars on the internet selling domain
names. The first company doing this was Network Solutions who was
subsequently bought by Verisign. They still charge $35.00 per year for
registration and are by far the most difficult organization we have come
across if your need to make changes to your registration. We have
clients who have given up trying to use their complicated system
of domain modifications and registered a new domain with another
provider. We do not recommend them.
There are however many other registrars who have streamlined there
interfaces and systems to focus on the customer. Typically you can get
domain names registered for under $10.00 per year. NicFair is one you should
