Every page on your site is a doorway page. Check your
statistics. (Control Panel, Report, Webalizer). What you will notice is that
some of your traffic comes into your site through pages other than your main
page. For instance, on this site we give away a free web tools product.
We find that a lot of people come to our site through these pages because;
-
They are indexed on some search engines
-
We are offering something for free
-
It's a popular search term
We decided to capitalize on this traffic by linking those pages
to our home page and advertising our services on those pages. The thinking is
that if they want the product, they may be developing a web site which
eventually will need hosting. New traffic, new business from an unrelated
keyword.
Think of every page on your site as a doorway page. Every page
needs to be optimized for search engines. Every page needs to be indexed.
Remember, some indexing spiders only cover the first 2 or 3 levels of your site,
so it's important to have these "doorway pages" in those levels.
It's really best to optimize each page for only one or two
keywords. Beyond that you are diluting the effect of your optimization. So, as
you can see, it pays to have several pages optimized individually for distinct
keywords. This is particularly true if you are selling multiple products. For
example, supposing you sold 10 different models of one manufacturers VCR. It
would make sense to have a separate page for each model, and have each page
optimized for the keyword representing that model. One page may be VCR1000, the
next VCR1050 and so on. Your keyword would then be respectively VCR1000 and
VCR1050.
What about search engines that just want your "Home"
page or "index" page?
The solution here is to register another domain name and use
that page as a doorway page. Do not use this to cloak. (Cloaking is a website
that is deliberately set up for search engines that jumps you to another site
after 1 to 5 seconds. You will risk having both sites banned if you do this.)
Make sure that this new site has lots of content for the keyword you are using
and end the page with a proper link to your main site. What search engines
really want is content. If someone searches for motorcycles, the page they go to
should be about motorcycles, not something like calendars with pictures of
motorcycles. Keep your content clean, well written with proper spelling and
grammar and you will be ranked higher.
