Inserting Keywords

Once you've chosen your keywords, it's time to optimize your site for submission to the search engines. Inserting your keywords is the next step in the process.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to stuff as many keywords onto a page as they can. This will do nothing but water down the effectiveness of your keywords. Choose one or two and use them carefully.

Meta tags are tags that contain information about the page being viewed and are located between the head tags on your page. You can view the meta tags on this page. In Internet Explorer, choose "View" and "Source".

The first and most important tag is the "Title" tag and this should be the first tag below the <head> tag. It should ideally contain under 7 words and include your keyword. Note that programs like FrontPage may move this tag down. You need to reposition it in your html editor.

The next important tag is the "description" tag which gives a basic overview of the page. You can use up to 255 words here.

The last important tag is your "keywords" tag. Make sure your keywords are located here in the singular and plural. Do not repeat your keyword several times as search engines will now rank you lower. They see this as spamming.

The unfortunate thing about meta tags is that many search engines give them very little importance. Every search engine is different when comes to how they rank your meta tags and you need to know their rules. Do a little research for each search engine and you'll soon see that this can be a very complicated process. You simply can't optimize one page for all search engines nor can you optimize one page for all keywords.

Other places to put your keywords are in the <alt> tag for images, and in the body text. Some search engines give a lot more weight to keywords in body text, particularly if they are in "heading" tags. The problem again is that you can over do it and the page can become totally unreadable to humans if you try and stuff in too many keywords without thinking about how it reads.

If all this is starting to sound complicated, you're right, it is. You could pay an outside company many thousands of dollars to get you into the top 30 positions on the search engines. If you don't have that kind of money, you're forced to do it yourself if you are at all serious about being found on the internet. Fortunately there's some software available that can help to automate the job. Hop over to Myrasoft and check out Webposition Gold, by far the best product on the market in our humble opinion. They also have some great "tips and tricks" articles and books you can buy. After all, you've invested a lot of time and money in your website. It would be a shame if no one could find it.
