Keywords

elect the right ones or lose

Selecting the right keywords for your page is one of the most important and most overlooked part of gaining positioning with the search engines. Choose the right one and you will be rewarded with an abundance of targeted traffic. Choose the wrong one and you will find yourself on the bottom of the list when that keyword is searched.

To make it even more difficult, what might be the right keyword for one search engine could be the entirely wrong keyword for another.

Let's take a look at an example. Suppose you were looking for a DVD player. Type in "DVD players" in your search box and see how many sites show up. On AOL alone there were 847,115 web pages that are listed for that search term. Now, let's modify it a bit. Try searching for "Sony DVD players" instead. Now there are only 960 pages listed for that search term. The more specific you can be with your keywords, the better your chances are that you will be near the top. Try it one more time. If I were looking to purchase a Sony DVD player, I probably would not be interested in a supplier half way around the world. Try "Sony DVD players Canada". There were no competing web pages for that term.

"Wow" you say, that's the term I'm going to use. Guess what? No traffic. The term "Sony DVD players Canada" also had no searches for that term. What you have to do is balance the search term against the number of searches.

For instance: The number of searches for "DVD players" on AOL at the time of writing this article was 4,152 in the last 60 days and 212 in the last 24 hours. The number of searches for "Sony DVD players" on AOL at the time of writing this article was 253 in the last 60 days and 13 in the last 24 hours. Obviously the best term is "DVD players" but you are competing against 847,115 other pages for attention. It would be easier to be positioned if you used the term "Sony DVD players" because there are only 960 competing pages....and you want to be in the top 30.

The ratio of searches vs competing pages is know as Keyword Effectiveness Index or KEI.

If you are really serious about being positioned with the search engines you will want to do your homework here; spend a little money and time doing the research and it will pay off in the end.

But wait! Where do I get all this information? The best source is
